Fujifilm announce new firmware for the X-Pro1, X-E1, X-E2 and X100S

The X-Pro1 will be v3.10 X-E1 v2.10 X-E1 v 1.10 X100S v1.10.

WOW!  What a fantastic early Christmas present from Fujifilm we have today!  Just when you think they’re done updating their cameras, they come out with a whole host of new features for them, and this time it’s across the board.  The X-Pro1, X-E1, X-E2 and X100S all have updates.  These updates serve not only to add new features, but to consolidate some features available in some cameras that weren’t available in others.  I’m pleased to finally find minimum shutter speed setting in AutoISO on the X-Pro1!  I know so many of us have been asking for that since the start, and they finally got there!!

The other feature which will make life a lot easier for those of us with multiple Fujifilm cameras is the ability to change the filename – we no longer have to be stuck with DSCF, we can choose what we want.  This is not only extremely useful in immediately discovering which camera took which image, but it will get rid of that annoying overlap where more than one camera is producing the same filename but obviously for different images.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve often got 10 different “DSCF00345” (or whatever) filenames!

The X-Pro1 gets a liveview preview of exactly what the settings (Aperture, Shutter, ISO) will give you in the final shot.  This is how the X100S works, but it is annoying because if you’re shooting flash and set the shutter to a high sync then the entire screen goes dark, but Fuji have recognised this and have added the option to turn it off when using external flash across the range.

The X-E1 and X100S have an improved liveview histogram.

Across the range, all images taken in high burst rate will be viewable as separate images rather than the current slideshow.

The X-Pro1 and X100S get improved Bright frame, with improved accuracy and a feature which maintains the position of the corrected AF frame when you take your finger off the shutter release having done a half-press AF lock.

The only downside…we have to wait!  5th December for the X-Pro1 and 19th December for the rest of the range.

There are a number of other minor updates and changes, check out the full press releases below for details.

This nice little table shows the consolidation of features across the range.

Fujifilm Launches Firmware Update for Flagship X-Pro1 Camera

New firmware update delivers more accurate framing and improved functionality

Mississauga ON, November 28, 2013 – FUJIFILM Canada today announced a new firmware update that improves the performance of the award-winning FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Compact System Camera, the flagship model in the premium X-Series line of digital cameras. This new firmware v3.10 update will offer users enhancements in operability and functionality.

Based on customer requests and suggestions, this latest firmware will offer X-Pro1 users the chance to update their model to incorporate functionality available on the most recent X-Series cameras launched in October 2013.

The X-Pro1 will continue as the company’s flagship X-Series model and Fujifilm is striving to keep the level of technology offered on this product similar to current FUJIFILM X cameras so that purchasers of the X-Pro1 will be able to enjoy using their camera for a longer period of time.

“Photographers around the world have trusted their images to Fujifilm and the X-Series, and this new firmware update is concrete evidence that we are listening to our customers and working hard to improve our products on a continuing basis,” says Greg Poole, Vice President, Imaging and Recording Media Products, Fujifilm Canada.

Key Features of New X-Pro1 Firmware v3.10
Improved Preview in Live View and Histogram

  • The image in the electronic viewfinder and histogram will reflect current exposure levels (with the shutter speed and aperture set during manual exposure also displayed)
  • In instances where the live view and the final shot will appear differently (eg: when using flash), this setting can be turned off

Improved Accuracy of the Framing Guidelines in the OVF

  • Coverage of the bright frame displaying the shooting area in the optical viewfinder has been improved so that the field of view is closer to the actual image
  • By maintaining the position of the bright frame with parallax compensation during AF lock, the shooting area can be checked even when letting go of the shutter release

Improved Operability

  • Aperture or shutter speed can be changed while maintaining exposure (EV value) with the AE lock button so the user can tweak settings at the last moment before shooting
  • When selecting “AUTO” in the ISO setting, users can also set standard ISO, maximum ISO and low-speed shutter limit, which has been extended to 1/500 seconds

Improved Functionality

  • Image filename (DSCF***) can now be changed to a filename of the user’s choice*1 is useful when organizing and creating groups of images after shooting

  • With the new firmware, all frames in continuous shooting are displayed as full screen shots in playback instead of thumbnails. The file number will now continue numerically, similar to standard single shots, for better management of images after shooting
  • Improved RAW file conversion function improves functionality by taking the user back to the original RAF image once conversion has been done

The X-Pro1 firmware v3.10 will be available on December 5, 2013.
